Unfortunately, many of today’s classrooms are underfunded, despite the importance of education. Teachers are forced to pay for supplies out of their own pocket as result.
Therefore, we, at Rising Construction Services, Inc., are pleased to have the chance to sponsor Ms. Droege’s 5th grade classroom at James Lewis Elementary School for the 2019-2020 school year. We will be chronicling this event as the #adoptaclassroom initiative on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and our website.
Here is a brief summary of the upcoming schedule:
September 20, 2019: National Pepperoni Pizza Day
We would bring pizzas to the school and have a picnic in the classroom for lunch. We would also initiate conversation and stimulate it by having the students choose and answer one of the several predetermined questions. Examples are What’s your favorite book? and Who do you admire the most?
October 10, 2019: World Mental Health Day
World Mental Health Day was first observed on October 10, 1992 by the World Federation for Mental Health. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that about 25% of adults have a mental health condition and about 50% may develop mental illness during their lifetime (Turner et al., 2016). It is time to dissolve the stigma on mental health by creating healthy discussions in classrooms. Therefore, we would create a discussion board in the classroom for lunch.
November 11,2019: Veterans Day
The classroom would make cards and inspirational videos for our brave military veterans here and overseas, containing words of encouragement.
December 6, 2019:National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day
We would create an activity that commemorates the event. The classroom would either watch an historical documentary or create small videos to post on Social Media. Please note that National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day falls on a Saturday this year and activities will take place on the preceding Friday.
January 29, 2020: National Puzzle Day
Founded in 2002 by Jodi Hill (National Day Calendar), we would observe this day by purchasing a puzzle for every student in the classroom. The students will frame their puzzles and then decorate their frames after solving their respective puzzle.
February 14, 2020: National Random Acts of Kindness Day
Originating in New Zealand (National Day Calendar), we would have the children observe it throughout the day by being kind to one another. Please note that National Random Acts of Kindness Day falls on a day where school is not in session this year and activities will take place on the preceding Friday.
March 12, 2020: National Plant a Flower Day
Although the origins of this day are unknown, it is celebrated on March 12 by planting flowers and looking toward to the upcoming Spring.
April 9, 2020: National Pet Day.
Founded in 2005 by Colleen Paige, this day celebrates our pets and brings attention to all of the world’s orphaned pets (National Day Calendar). We would have the students share photos of their pets and prompt them with relevant questions. The students will also make hand-made toys to donate to a local shelter.
May 1, 2020: May Day Baskets
We would discuss the history of May Day beginning with its origins as the ancient first day of summer. We would also participate in the tradition of harvesting flowers and giving them to friends.
We look forward to sharing this journey with you as the school year progresses!
