Rising Construction Services Takes A Stand Against Distracted Driving

Here at Rising Construction Services, we want to bring attention to Distracted Driving Awareness Month this April. Whether it be texting, chatting on the phone or to others in the car, adjusting your music or navigation, eating and drinking, applying makeup, or more, distracted driving has become an epidemic that can be a fatal issue on our roads.

In 2019, Distracted Driving Killed 3,142 People

According to nhtsa.gov, “Distracted driving killed 3,142 people – a 10% increase from 2018,” in 2019. Now more than ever, with the emergence of smartphones and their updated technology, there are a multitude of ways to become distracted while driving. Having the world at our fingertips has become the norm, but many people struggle to turn their attention to their devices off, even for a car ride.

April is widely recognized as Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and that’s why we want to take the opportunity to regroup, recognize and ultimately address the many issues that come along with distracted driving. While you may not think twice about glancing down at your phone or getting a bite to eat while driving, these actions can lead to some very serious consequences that could be avoidable by taking a stand against distracted driving.

Work Zone Safety

In 2019, there was a significant increase in work zone crashes and fatalities nationwide. According to workzonesafety.org, there were a reported 762 fatal crashes reported, as well as 842 fatalities across the United States. Crash data over the past decade shows that these numbers have only gone up year over year, so what can we do to stop it?

Safety on the road not only affects the driver themselves, but other drivers and individuals on the road. This can include workers and individuals present on the road in construction or work zones. One reason that it is even more important to pay better attention, drive safely and reduce your speed while driving through construction and work zones is because unlike other drivers on the road, workers are not protected by the frame of a vehicle while out on the road. There are many reasons why precautions like speed reduction and lane closures exist in work zones, so be sure to follow the law and stay off your device to keep the safety of yourself and others top of mind.

What Can You Do?

There are a number of things that you can do to keep yourself, your friends and your family in check when it comes to distracted driving.

  • Don’t text. Rather, park your car in a safe location if you have a message that requires your immediate attention.

  • Set ‘Do Not Disturb.’ Use your phones built-in safety features to keep you off of your device while you drive.

  • Don’t scroll. Stay off of your apps until you get to your next location.

  • Pick a Designated Texter. If you are in the car with friends or family and must be in contact with others via your cell phone, designate someone in the car to be responsible for your device and responding to messages.
